At the start of the full council meeting on 30th June 2025, Cllr Paige read a statement in remembrance of Cllr M.Atkins who died earlier this June.
It is with deep respect and sorrow that we remember Councillor Monica Atkins, whose recent passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the town’s civic life.
Monica was a dedicated public servant, known for her unwavering commitment to the well-being of Machynlleth and its residents. Her tenure on the Town Council was marked by a passionate hands-on approach to local governance.
In 2019, as Mayor, she cast the decisive vote that made Machynlleth the first town in Wales to officially support Welsh independence—a moment that underscored her belief in self-determination and democratic engagement.
Monica was also a tireless campaigner for local issues. She championed the rights of residents affected by inconsistent recycling services, highlighting the importance of local knowledge in public service delivery. She advocated for the cleanup of neglected council-owned garages in Cae Crwn, emphasizing the health and safety of her constituents and was passionate about the delivery of health care locally.
Her compassion extended to her colleagues as well. In 2018, she proposed a lasting memorial for two long-serving councillors, Sylvia Rowlands and David Wyn Davies, recognizing their contributions to the community.?
Cllr Atkins’s legacy is one of integrity and deep-rooted care for her community. Her voice and presence will be sorely missed, but her impact will continue to resonate through the town she served so faithfully.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who were touched by her life and work.
Cllr J.Paige, Mayor.
